Descripción

The Licancabur Volcano (5,900 m), on the Chile–Bolivia border, is iconic for its near-perfect cone and its technical, demanding ascent. The route features loose rock and steep grades, requiring excellent fitness and high-altitude experience.

Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer and camp

We’ll drive from San Pedro de Atacama across the desert toward the border and reach the base of Licancabur, where we’ll set up camp. You’ll take an acclimatization hike to prepare your body, enjoy altiplano views, and fine-tune your gear. Early dinner and rest.

Day 2: Summit push and return

We start the ascent at 02:00 AM. The climb takes about 8 hours (depending on weather and group pace). During the sunrise you’ll have views over the salt flat and surrounding ranges. At the summit (5,900 m), you’ll have time for photos and a break. Then we descend to camp, break down, and return to San Pedro de Atacama to end the activity.

Important notes

  • This is a high-mountain route with steep slopes and loose rock; reduced oxygen is noticeable.
  • The summit attempt depends on group fitness and the weather conditions of the day.
  • If the Chilean approach is not possible, an alternative on the Bolivian side may be evaluated (subject to logistics and feasibility).
  • Recommended gear: base layer, warm mid-layer (fleece/sweater), windproof shell, high-ankle trekking boots, hat, gloves, sunscreen, and sunglasses.
  • Pick-up and drop-off not available for lodgings outside the urban area, in ayllus (Quitor, Yaye, Checar, Sequitor, Solor, Coyo) or in Toconao.
