Descripción

We’ll depart San Pedro de Atacama westward to explore two desert highlights. First stop: Yerbas Buenas, a site of great historical value with one of the region’s most important petroglyph groups. Ancient indigenous caravans once traveled this route between northwest Argentina, the Bolivian Altiplano, and the Pacific Ocean. You’ll see rock engravings of llamas and camelids, birds, monkeys, and dogs.


Next, you’ll visit the Rainbow Valley, named for the mineral colors in its formations. You’ll take a 1-hour out and 1-hour back hike along an easy trail, moving at a relaxed pace to appreciate layers of ochres, greens, and reds.


To finish, you’ll head to the Salado River area, where a small valley invites a short walk for fresh viewpoints and photos. We’ll then return to San Pedro de Atacama.

  • The order of visits may change on the day due to conditions.
  • Rainbow Valley hike: 1 hour out + 1 hour back along the trail.
  • Pick-up and drop-off is not available for lodgings outside the urban area, in nearby ayllus (Quitor, Yaye, Checar, Sequitor, Solor, Coyo) or in Toconao.

  • The vehicle will depend on the size of the group, having a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (or similar) for 18 people, or a Volare (or similar) for maximum 25 people.

  • The maximum altitude reached is 3500 m. For a good acclimation, our recommendation is to eat a light meal and drink lots of water the previous days to the excursion. Because of the altitude, we recommend leaving this tour for the end of your stay in San Pedro de Atacama.
