What to bring:
We’ll start our journey from Salta City towards Salinas Grandes, one of the most breathtaking landscapes in northern Argentina and the third-largest salt flat in South America. This vast white desert, recognized as one of the 7 Wonders of Argentina, is famous for its unique hexagonal salt formations and stunning contrast with the deep blue sky, perfect for unforgettable photos.
The ascent begins through the charming villages of Volcán and Tumbaya, both nestled along the Rio Grande. Our first stop will be Purmamarca, a picturesque town home to the famous Hill of Seven Colors, a multicolored geological formation framing the main square and its traditional craft market.
You’ll then take the winding Cuesta de Lipán mountain road, reaching 4,170 m (13,681 feet) of altitude. Along the way, you may spot typical Andean flora, such as tola shrubs and giant cardon cacti, and, if lucky, wildlife like vicunas or soaring condors.
At Salinas Grandes, you’ll have free time to walk across the brilliant white salt crust and take surreal, out-of-this-world photos. After exploring, we’ll return to Purmamarca for lunch and some leisure time before heading back to Salta City, ending a day filled with the unforgettable landscapes of Argentina’s northwest.
