We will start the trek by departing from the ecolodge in Puerto Williams. Virginia Bay is located 2 kilometers (approx. 1.25 miles) away, where we will be able to spot a wide variety of birds that inhabit the place: woodpeckers, the Southern crested caracara, the Chimango caracara, the Upland goose, and petrels, among other birds. If we are a bit lucky, we might see sea lions and penguins, and at some times during the year, even whales.


As we hike along, we will also come across the shell middens, archaeological sites where the Yaghans, an indigenous people who inhabited the region, used to set up their camps. A main feature of the shell middens is they were located at protected coastal spots, so that less wind from the sea would reach them. After discovering more about the history of these people, we will continue on our trek until arriving back at the starting point to end the activity.
