Rapa Nui’s northwest coast reveals a side of the island that most visitors never see. Towering volcanic cliffs plunge into the Pacific Ocean as the Rapa Nui Cave’s Trek trail leads you through landscapes shaped by ancient lava flows and into caves carved by volcanic activity over thousands of years. You can choose between two routes:

  • 2-hour trek (shared): Ana Kakenga and Ana Te Pahu.
  • 4-hour trek (shared or private): Ana Kakenga, Ana Te Pahu, Ana Te Pora, and Ahu Te Peu.


Both are moderate-intensity treks, as they take place on uneven terrain.


Ana Kakenga, also known as the Cave of Two Windows, features two natural openings overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Ana Te Pahu is an extensive lava tube where protected native vegetation still thrives. The longer route also includes Ana Te Pora and the archaeological complex of Ahu Te Peu before returning through the inland area of Roiho, where you'll meet your vehicle back to Hanga Roa. Both hikes are easy, led by a local guide throughout the experience, and require no previous hiking experience.
