At the southernmost point of the continent, Cape Froward invites you to discover one of the most remote and pristine corners of the planet: the Francisco Coloane Marine Park. On this journey you will spend a full day surrounded by glaciers, mountains and abundant marine life, perfect for travelers who love nature and wild southern landscapes.
We start very early in Punta Arenas, where you board a bus heading south, traveling about 50 km to the Bahia Carrera area, your embarkation point. From there, you begin an approximately 10-hour cruise into an almost untouched environment, where the wind, the sea and the mountain range set the pace of the journey.
Along the route, the scenery wraps you in mountains, glaciers and lenga and coihue forests that almost reach the shoreline. In these southern waters you may spot humpback and sei whales, as well as Peale’s dolphins, Commerson’s dolphins, Magellanic penguins, sea lions, petrels and cormorants. Each sighting turns the cruise into a true marine safari in one of the most remarkable corners of the Southern Hemisphere.
The maritime itinerary includes sailing from Bahia Carrera toward Cape Froward, Cape Holland, Rupert Island, Paso Inglés, Paso Shag, Seno Helado and the Sarmiento Glacier, before starting the return to port.
Important notes
The tour is made in a catamaran with capacity for 80 passengers.
The probability of watching whales is very high, because the tour is made during summer months, only moment in the year in which these animals travel to the South Pole to feed themselves. The Francisco Coloane Marine Park, where the tour is made, has krill and small fishes, main food source of these cetacean. Nevertheless, as the animal behavior can be unpredictable, the whale watching is not completely guaranteed.
