You’ll begin this direct transfer in Uyuni, traveling across the high-altitude plateau (Altiplano) stretching between Bolivia and Chile. The border crossing is through Hito Cajón, approximately 40 km from San Pedro de Atacama. This border pass sits at an altitude of over 4,400 meters (14,400 feet). The journey itself becomes part of your trip, taking you from vast highland plains to the desert before arriving in Chilean territory.
The service operates with two vehicles: one in Bolivia and another in Chile, with a vehicle change at the border crossing. There are no stops along the route, not even for lunch, allowing you to optimize your total travel time. Each passenger may carry at most one bag or suitcase of 15 kilos and one sleeping bag, which will go above the 4x4. Because they will be outside the vehicle, it is recommended to take a bag rather than a suitcase, as suitcases are fragile and could be exposed to potential damage. If you do choose to bring a suitcase, it must a maximum size of a cabin suitcase (55 x 40 x 20 cm).
It depends on the passenger’s nationality. Passengers from Chile and the rest of South America, and passengers from Western Europe do not need tourist visa, while the passengers from United States, Central America, Asia and Africa do need tourist visa, which price is US$ 100 or US$ 160 according to the country (you can check the price per country here). The visa is obtained directly in the border, where along with the payment of the visa in cash (bolivianos or US dollars in good condition), the passengers will have to present their passport and two wallet-size photographs. In case you are a foreign person resident in Chile, besides your passport, you should take your ID card, so you can prove your residence to the police authorities in customs.
