We’ll begin in San Pedro de Atacama and head southeast into the Atacama Desert. Our first major stop is Piedras Rojas, also known as the Aguas Calientes salt flat. You’ll drive up to 4,200 m in altitude and take a 1 hour 15 minute hike to admire the copper-colored rocks, surrounding lagoons, and salt flats.
Next, you’ll visit the high-altitude lagoons Miscanti and Miñiques, where your guide will explain the Andean flora and fauna that thrive in these wetlands. You’ll continue to Laguna Chaxa, a classic of the Salar de Atacama, ideal for spotting flamingos and taking photos. Along the way, make brief stops in Socaire and at the Tropic of Capricorn for great photo ops.
We’ll then return to San Pedro de Atacama, wrapping up a full day of Andean landscapes, wildlife, and unforgettable viewpoints.
Important notes
- The order of stops may change on the day due to conditions.
- In winter, access to Miscanti and Miñiques may be closed due to snow. If so, the visit is replaced with Laguna Tuyajto.
- Pick-up and drop-off is not available for lodgings outside the urban area, in nearby ayllus (Quitor, Yaye, Checar, Sequitor, Solor, Coyo) or in Toconao.

A great day out. Breakfast and lunch were amazing. Red Rocks was very windy to dress for that. The flamingoes on our day were a bit far away to see clearly. Bring binoculars.
