Description

Discover Little Africa in Rio de Janeiro on this walking tour through the city’s historic port area, a key place to understand Afro-Brazilian history, culture, and the origins of samba.

The tour begins at Praça Mauá, one of the most emblematic spaces in Rio’s revitalized port district. This area blends historic and modern architecture, reflecting the transformation of the port and its importance in the city’s development.

From there, you will walk to Largo da Prainha, a vibrant area where African influence is visible in the music, traditions, and cultural life of the neighborhood.

The tour continues to the iconic Pedra do Sal, a historic site in the Saúde district and one of the most important birthplaces of samba in Rio. For decades, musicians and local communities gathered here to celebrate with music and dance, shaping one of Brazil’s most important cultural traditions.

Finally, you will visit Cais do Valongo, a 19th-century dock where thousands of enslaved Africans arrived in Brazil. Today it is an archaeological site recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, considered one of the most significant places to understand the history of the African diaspora in the Americas.
