What to bring:
Explore the history and culture of the city on this Free Walking Tour of Rio de Janeiro’s Historic Center, a guided walk through some of the most iconic landmarks in downtown Rio.
The experience begins in Cinelândia, where you will see the façade of the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Theater, one of the city’s most important cultural buildings. Opened in 1909, this opera house features eclectic architecture inspired by the great European theaters. You will also visit Floriano Peixoto Square, the largest public square in downtown Rio and an important historic and cultural gathering place.
The tour then continues to Santa Teresa, where you will visit the famous Selarón Steps. This colorful urban artwork was created by Chilean artist Jorge Selarón, who began decorating the staircase in 1990 with thousands of tiles from around the world. The staircase stretches about 125 meters and has 215 steps, entirely covered with vibrant mosaics.
Next, you will explore Lapa, a historic neighborhood known for its bohemian past and for one of Rio’s most recognizable landmarks: the Carioca Aqueduct, also known as the Arcos da Lapa, an iconic architectural symbol of the city.
The tour continues to the Metropolitan Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro, officially the Cathedral of Saint Sebastian, a striking modernist building with a conical shape that has become one of the city’s most distinctive structures.
The walk then reaches Largo da Carioca, one of the most traditional and lively spots in the historic center. Here you will also learn about the location of the famous Confeitaria Colombo, one of Rio’s most iconic historic cafés. Finally, the tour ends at Praça XV de Novembro, a square of great historical importance in Brazil, located along the shores of Guanabara Bay.
A free tour is a guided walking tour for which no fixed price is set in advance. At the end of the tour, the guide expects a tip as a thank you for their time and expertise, but the amount is up to you, depending on what you consider fair. It's a flexible and accessible way to get to know the city with the guidance of an expert.
