What to bring:
We’ll meet at the scheduled time at Bigfoot Base Camp on the northeast shore of Lake Grey. We’ll begin with a safety briefing and introduction, where your expert guide explains the route and timing. You’ll then be fitted with full technical gear: ice axe, crampons, harness, and helmet.
Fully equipped, we’ll board a Zodiac boat for a 15-minute ride to Nunatak Island on the western arm of the Grey Glacier. From there, you’ll take a 1-hour hike over safe terrain to reach the ice. Next comes the highlight: an approximately 2.5-hour glacier trek, exploring crevasses, meltwater streams and lagoons, and ice tunnels in stunning shades of white and blue. We’ll finish with a Zodiac return to Bigfoot Base Camp.
Like any human activity, ice hiking does have some degree of impact. However, since it is carried out in small groups and guided by certified guides who promote best practices, this impact is minimal and does not pose a threat to the glacier’s natural behavior. This is confirmed by glaciologists who regularly assess and monitor it.
No. The activities on Grey Glacier are only available for passengers who are doing a trekking circuit inside Torres del Paine National Park and have at least one night of accommodation at Grey Campsite or Refugio Grey, since the meeting point (Bigfoot Base Camp) is located within the circuit. We do not offer or recommend arriving via the Grey Glacier Navigation, as it may be suspended due to weather conditions. If the return trip is suspended, you won’t be able to leave the park that same day and you could be stranded inside the area.
