Just 30-minute boat ride from Caleta Tortel, thisA apenas 3 km de Caleta Tortel island has been declared a historical monument. It is part of the fjords and channels linking the Northern and Southern Ice Fields, where early settlers arrived to exploit the cypress wood from Las Guaitecas.
On the island, you will see 33 wooden crosses, remains of the graves of workers from the Baker Exploitation Company in 1906. Historians estimate around 120 people died here, although the reasons remain uncertain, inspiring many theories.
You will walk along wooden pathways through the native forest, hearing stories and legends about this place, while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding archipelago.
We’ll wrap up the tour with the 30-minute boat ride back to Caleta Tortel after a tour that combines history, nature, and the enduring mystery of the Isla de los Muertos.
The boat ride during the tour takes place on a covered vessel, which is great for staying comfortable and protected from the weather along the way. It’s an 8-meter boat powered by two 50 HP engines, giving it solid power and stability on the water. Plus, it has cushioned seats, so the ride is more enjoyable, especially if you just want to relax and take in the scenery.
